Plant Science Student Conference 2024

June 17th - 20th

Welcome

Come join us for an amazing time at the Plant Science Student Conference [PSSC @ IPB] from June 17th to June 20th, 2024, at the Leibniz Institute for Plant Biochemistry (IPB), Halle.

You'll be part of three days packed with interesting talks, hands-on workshops, and a day dedicated to making new friends through fun activities.

We've lined up some fantastic keynote speakers to share their insights and make the conference even more exciting.

We're inviting not just PhD students from IPK Gatersleben and IPB Halle but also those from the CEPLAS program all across Germany.

Even if you're just starting out and don't have all your research results yet, we'd love for you to share your plans. You'll get valuable feedback and suggestions from your fellow PhD students.

Our aim is to make this year's conference both educational and fun. Join us for an unforgettable experience where we'll spark inspiration, build connections, and create memories to last a lifetime.

The conference theme transcends disciplinary boundaries, encompassing the multifaceted interactions between plants, their environment, and the myriad factors influencing their growth, development, and resilience.

Sessions at the conference will delve into a wide array of topics, ranging from the intricacies of plant immunity to the dynamic mechanisms of root communication and the intricate pathways of nutrient uptake. By showcasing the latest advancements in these fields, the conference aims to illuminate new horizons for sustainable agriculture and food production.

Above all, the conference seeks to inspire the next generation of plant scientists, nurturing their curiosity, creativity, and passion for tackling global issues. By empowering young researchers and fostering collaboration, the conference aspires to catalyze a ripple effect of positive change, ultimately contributing to the collective endeavor of feeding a growing population sustainably while nurturing the health of our planet.

In essence, the conference embodies the spirit of our institute's mission, serving as a beacon of hope and progress in the quest for a brighter, more sustainable future for all.

Program

Prof. Dr. Stefanie Ranf

University of Fribourg, Switzerland

She is a distinguished professor in the field plant-bacteria interaction. Her research is dedicated to unraveling the molecular intricacies that define the dynamic relationship between plants and their bacterial counterparts. Her lab focusses on unraveling the sophisticated immune responses exhibited by plants, as well as the ingenious adaptation strategies employed by bacteria within their plant hosts. Her team aims to provide comprehensive insights into the delicate equilibrium between plant defense mechanisms and the survival strategies of microbial partners.

Prof. Dr. Gabriel Schaaf

University of Bonn, Germany

He is a renowned researcher in the field of plant nutrition. His research group is interested in understanding how plants perceive and respond to nutrient deficiencies and toxicities. The team particularly focuses on the responses to such nutrient imbalances in the presence of additional biotic and abiotic stresses, to understand how plants “decide” which of the often-antagonistic pathways to trigger to cope with various environmental challenges.

Dr. Marie Barberon

University of Geneva, Switzerland

She is a notable researcher in the field of nutrient signalling and developmental biology of root. Her research focuses on nutrient transport in roots and plant adaptation to abiotic stresses focusing on relationship between root development and plant nutrition. Her lab is interested to unravel radial transport of nutrients in root pertaining to its development, cell signallling and nutrient acquisition phenomenon.

Mindblowing Workshops

Workshop I

Lead by Dr. Lars-Ole Haag

Performance Mastery

Elevate Your Presence, Elevate Your Impact!

In this immersive workshop, participants will explore key elements of effective communication and presence, with a focus on practical techniques to enhance their delivery in various settings. During the session, there will  be an introduction to fundamental aspects of presence, including posture, breathing, voice modulation, and articulation. Through illustrative examples and practical exercises, participants will gain an understanding of how these elements contribute to impactful communication. The workshop aims to inspire participants to reflect on their own communication styles and provides a framework for further exploration and development. Also, it offers valuable perspectives and tools to empower attendees in their journey toward enhancing their presence.

Workshop II

Scientific Storytelling

Unlock the power of storytelling in science! Join our Scientific Storytelling workshop and learn how to captivate your audience with compelling narratives about your research. Whether you're a seasoned scientist or just starting out, mastering the art of storytelling can elevate your communication skills and make your work more accessible and engaging. Discover techniques to craft narratives that resonate with diverse audiences, and gain valuable insights into the impact of storytelling on scientific outreach and dissemination. Don't miss this opportunity to transform your research into captivating stories that inspire and inform!

Lead by Dr. Peter Paul Heym

Poster Presentations

Explore and discuss posters at your leisure! Our poster walls, conveniently located in the corridors alongside refreshment stations, offer the perfect setting for casual interaction (e.g., during the 30-minute breaks after each session).

Say goodbye to cramped poster sessions in tiny rooms!

We encourage adding a small picture of yourself to your poster (or pinning one nearby) for easy identification.

Organizers will provide mounting materials (walls/pins), so remember to bring your poster. Portrait posters up to A0 format (118.9 cm length × 84.1 cm width) are welcome.

Oral Presentations

Join us for a dynamic presentation experience!

Each presenter will have 15 minutes total,
with a maximum talk time of 10 minutes.

Optionally, you can opt for a shorter talk, leaving more time for discussion

(e.g., 8 mins + 7 mins).

Remember, this conference is a supportive environment for students by students; perfection is not expected,

and we're all here to learn together.
